This is a promotional image for the movie Re:Generation Music Project that I found on a DJ blog.
“Follow DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method as they remix, recreate and re-imagine five traditional styles of music. From the classical perfection of the Berklee Symphony Orchestra to the bayou jams of New Orleans jazz, our five distinctive DJs collaborate with some of today’s biggest musicians to discover how our musical past is influencing the future.”
That quote about the project from it’s creators sums up its significance perfectly, DJs collaborating with traditional music to create new pieces of art that blend the two. Though I had actually heard the Skrillex/Doors combo before I knew about the project itself and made the assumption that Skrillex had simply used samples from The Doors recordings and created a song with them as instruments, like Girl Talk describes in RIP, so I’d worried that the focus was on the DJs. After watching the movie it definitely seems like they put the effort into understanding each other and the history behind the styles that each of them was working.
“Culture always builds on the past”
The contrast of methodology between the old and the new was interesting to watch. You can tell that the younger artists were learning from the older, but I couldn’t tell how much that was reciprocated. The Orchestra definitely embraced DJ Premier, but Pretty Lights struggled with Ralph Stanley who was very old school.
Also, the the songs produced are all available for free download on their website.
